Meet Dr. Sobel

Robert J. Sobel, M.D. is a life-long Chicagoan who attended the six year Honors Program in Medical Education at Northwestern University, graduating with highest distinction in 1990. He then spent five years at the University of Chicago Medical Center, completing his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Endocrinology. He joined his father, Gerald W. Sobel, M.D., in 1995, and they established the medical practice that has continued to this day from an office at 30 North Michigan Ave. Dr. Sobel is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine-Endocrinology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, and maintains board certification in both Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism.

Dr. Sobel has devoted his career to maintaining a state-of-the-art but individualized approach to primary care medicine, endocrinology, and, most specifically, the care of patients with all forms of diabetes. He has been involved in several research areas since medical school and remains dedicated to balancing a modern approach with the lessons of the past. He is humbled by the efforts that individuals with diabetes must put forth daily. He believes their incessant challenge to stay in “balance,” that is, working to avoid the extremes of both high and low blood sugar, serves as a universal lesson for all of us.

Dr. Sobel has remained active in teaching as part of his duties at Northwestern. As the inheritor of an independent medical practice, he has also strived diligently to understand the best ways to balance modern patient care with financial realities. He is particularly concerned about the undue complexity introduced by cost-control mechanisms that complicate the introduction of new agents and technologies. For instance, the huge price discrepancies between new and old drugs often require patients and physicians to navigate time-consuming bureaucratic tangles. While Dr. Sobel looks to promote a more streamlined system, he remains dedicated to overcoming these obstacles for his patients.
